OUR STORY AND TEAM

No one knew it at the time, but the origin of Maguey Melate started in the beer Mecca of the world, Germany. Our founder took a sip of artisanal mezcal from a water bottle brought in a suitcase from Oaxaca and… well… didn’t really get it!

It wasn’t until over a year later in Minas, Oaxaca, Mexico, staring up at a 14 foot tall 25 year old Tobaziche, making a new friend out of the 34 year old mezcalero Antonio Martínez, and trying to understand exactly how the earth oven pit resulted in different flavor notes from a pressurized autoclave, that the context around artisanal mezcal would be the catalyst for really appreciating the spirit and the artisanal tradition.

This experience began an obsessive journey into wanting to taste more and more varietals from more and more mezcaleros and to consume more and more agave spirit knowledge. Simultaneously, it wasn’t long before a mezcalito would permanently replace the evening glass of red wine. Like so many before him, our founder was hooked and there was no turning back!

As Maguey Melate became more aware of the mezcal landscape, we wanted to create not just another brand, but a marketing and logistics company that would serve the mezcaleros that deserved to be the star of the show. The unique individuals who made the magic happen would be the brand.

Our mission was clear and simple. Promote the mezcalero and the artisanal process in the most entertaining and comprehensive way possible so the rest of the world would fully appreciate agave distillates the way we had learned to down in Oaxaca. Our journey to bring Mexico’s palenques to the doorstep of international consumers began.

Building relationships with mezcaleros and sampling the world’s best destilado de agave is my professional and personal passion, along with visiting Oaxacan markets, perfecting my grasshopper sauce recipe, cooking, and generally educating people on mezcal. My role in Maguey Melate is to bring the most authentic mezcaleros into our club, make sure each bottle of agave spirits is best in class, and advise on how to make each customer’s educational experience as complete and accurate as possible!” back_bgcolor=”#aad4ab” back_textcolor=”#000000″ back_bgimage_size=”large” width=”350″ height=”350″ border_size=”2″ border_color=”#b2463d” padding=”5%”]

Since starting with Maguey Melate I have fallen in love with the people and culture of Oaxaca.
