Some producers spend their whole life in someone else's shadow. Semei is stepping into the light on his own terms.
Semei García Ramos grew up in Santa María La Pila, a small village in Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz, surrounded by mezcal royalty — including his grandfather, the legendary maestro Valente Ángel García Juárez. While Semei still helps run his grandfather's celebrated Alipus production, he's spent years quietly building his own name, and reviewers who've tried his other releases consistently note a talent that echoes his grandfather's while carving out its own distinct character.
Tepextate: Patience as an Ingredient
Tepextate is one of the slowest-maturing wild agaves used in mezcal, often taking 15 to 25 years to reach harvest — a genuine commitment for any producer willing to work with it. Growing on the rocky hillsides of southern Oaxaca, it's prized for a flavor profile that balances smoke, minerality, and an almost herbal floral quality unlike faster-maturing varietals like Espadín.
From Earth Oven to Copper
As with Semei's other releases, this Tepextate is roasted in a traditional earth oven, naturally fermented, and double-distilled in copper — a meticulous process he's clearly absorbed from a lifetime spent alongside his grandfather.
What to Expect in the Glass
Expect the hallmark Tepextate profile: bright smoke and mineral intensity up front, opening into herbal, almost medicinal complexity, with the kind of lingering depth that comes only from an agave willing to wait two decades to be ready.
Why This Bottle Matters
Every Tepextate on the market represents real patience — but from a producer already being called a "future legend" by serious mezcal reviewers, this bottle is a chance to get in early on a name that's likely to only grow more sought-after.
A serious sipper for the patient drinker — fitting, given how long the agave itself had to wait.
