Some families don't just make mezcal. They've made it for two centuries.

The Navarro family has been distilling mezcal in Mexquitic de Carmona, San Luis Potosí, for roughly 200 years — a tradition passed down so consistently that their mezcal, known locally as Campanilla, was once named the best in the entire country at Mexico City's First National Gathering of Mezcal Masters. Daniel Navarro Hernandez continues that legacy today, working the entire process as a true family operation — alongside his wife and children, with no outside labor at any stage.

Salmiana: The Heart of Potosino Mezcal

Wild Agave Salmiana is the defining agave of San Luis Potosí — a slower-growing, lower-yield varietal than Espadín, but one prized for a flavor Daniel himself describes as genuinely unique, distinct from anything grown elsewhere in Mexico. The Navarro family has even begun cultivating their own agave nursery from seed, ensuring this wild varietal has a future.

Stone Tanks and Clay Stills

This mezcal is fermented in underground stone tanks and distilled using the "vino de campanilla" method — a clay-pot distillation technique found almost nowhere else in Mexico, unique to this corner of San Luis Potosí. It's a slower, more mineral-forward process than copper distillation, giving Potosino mezcal its own unmistakable regional signature.

What to Expect in the Glass

Expect a mezcal shaped as much by its clay still as by its agave — earthy, mineral, and rustic, with the natural sweetness of Salmiana coming through clean and unadorned. It's less refined and more elemental than Oaxacan mezcal, reflecting both the harsh, high-desert terroir of the Potosino highlands and centuries of unbroken family technique.

Why This Bottle Matters

San Luis Potosí's mezcal tradition is finally getting recognition it's deserved for generations — and Daniel Navarro's family is at the center of that story, both as multi-generational bearers of the craft and as its most decorated recent representatives. This bottle is a genuine taste of Mexico's mezcal history, made by a family who never stopped.

A bottle worth savoring slowly — this is 200 years of technique in a glass.
