There's a sign at the entrance to Santiago Matatlán that says it all: "World Capital of Mezcal."
It's not an idle boast. Santiago Matatlán, in Oaxaca's Tlacolula District, is one of the most concentrated mezcal-producing towns on earth — a place where nearly every family has some connection to the craft. Pedro Santiago Martinez makes his mezcal here, working with Espadín agave the traditional way: earth-oven roasted, naturally fermented, and double-distilled in copper.
Reposado: Where Raw Meets Refined
Unlike a joven mezcal, bottled straight off the still, this Reposado rests in wood before release — a process that mellows the raw, vegetal intensity of young mezcal into something rounder and more contemplative, while still letting the agave's character shine through underneath.
What to Expect in the Glass
Expect a familiar, comforting oak character up front — vanilla, dried lumber, and a good dose of green agave, with earthy notes of parsnip, artichoke, and raw potato underneath. The finish leans into something more elemental: wet clay, moss, and well water, giving this reposado real depth beyond a simple "oaked mezcal" profile.
Why This Bottle Matters
A reposado from the actual capital of mezcal production is as close to a definitive regional expression as you can get — proof that Oaxaca's most famous mezcal town can still surprise you, even in a more familiar aged format.
A great bridge bottle for tequila reposado drinkers curious about crossing over into mezcal.
