Some mezcaleros are born into greatness. This one grew into it.
Semei García Ramos was raised in Santa María La Pila, a small village in the mountains of Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz, Oaxaca, surrounded by mezcal royalty — including his grandfather, the legendary maestro Valente Ángel García Juárez. What started as a kid tagging along with his grandfather to have something to do turned into a genuine calling. Today, still in his twenties, Semei runs his own production team — but this bottle captures an earlier moment: a batch he distilled back in 2012, as a young mezcalero still finding his voice.
A Rare, Documented Vintage
This particular lot (SEM-MEX-002) was made from maguey Mexicano (Agave rhodacantha) and has developed a reputation among serious mezcal collectors as genuinely unlike anything else in the category — an unusual, almost playful flavor profile that stands out even among other Mexicano expressions from the same region.
What to Expect in the Glass
Expect something unconventional: medicinal herbs, anise, basil, and white onion on the nose, joined by notes of cherry and pink lemonade candy. The palate leans into honey, burnt sage, sweet cream, and a distinctive, almost nostalgic candy-like character — layered over the strong mineral backbone typical of mezcal from the Miahuatlán highlands. It's a genuinely singular pour, unlike any other Mexicano in the category.
Why This Bottle Matters
Distilled by a mezcal dynasty's next generation before he'd even fully come into his own, this bottle is both a rare, aged vintage and a documented early chapter of a producer many in the mezcal world already consider a future legend.
A must-try for collectors chasing genuinely unusual flavor profiles — this isn't a "safe" mezcal, and that's exactly the point.
