Two generations, one palenque, nearly a century of combined experience.
German Manzano Martinez started making mezcal at 19 years old, after marrying at 18 and needing to build a life of his own. Thirty-seven years later, he runs a meticulously kept palenque just outside the town of Zoquitlán — clean, organized, agave dotting the property — working side by side with his 68-year-old father, Torbio, who's been distilling for nearly 60 years at his own palenque just a few hundred meters away.
Madre Cuixe: The "Big Sister" of the Karwinskii Family
Madre Cuixe belongs to the same Karwinskii agave family as the more austere Cuixe, but tends toward a rounder, fruitier, more generous character. German ferments the roasted, tahona-crushed agave in pine vats using natural wild yeast and well water, then double-distills it in copper — the same meticulous process behind everything that comes out of his palenque.
What to Expect in the Glass
Where German's straight Cuixe leans mineral and austere, this Madre Cuixe opens up into something brighter and more floral — think jasmine, mango, fresh orange juice, and vanilla, with soft touches of bay leaf and orange blossom water. It's an easier, more immediately generous mezcal, without losing the rocky backbone that defines everything from this agave family.
Why This Bottle Matters
German isn't chasing scale — he's spent nearly four decades refining a craft he learned as a teenager, and it shows in the consistency and care behind every batch. This Madre Cuixe is proof that patience and repetition, generation after generation, is what actually makes mezcal exceptional.
A gentler, fruitier introduction to the Karwinskii agave family — a great next step if the mineral intensity of straight Cuixe felt like a lot.
