A bottle that carries a legacy.
Madre Cuishe belongs to the Karwinskii family of agaves — tall, tree-like plants endemic to Oaxaca's Sierra Sur and Central Valleys, prized by mezcal drinkers for the rich, nutty depth they bring to the glass. This particular batch was crafted in Sagala, part of the municipality of San Luis Amatlán, in the heart of the Miahuatlán district — a small, tight-knit mezcal-producing community in Oaxaca's southern mountains.
Remembering Silvestre
This mezcal was made by Silvestre Jiménez Peralta, a mezcalero remembered by those who tasted his work as a genuinely gifted craftsman. Silvestre passed away from COVID, and bottles like this one now stand as a quiet tribute to his skill and the tradition he carried forward — Madre Cuishe distilled the way it's been made in this part of Oaxaca for generations, cooked in an earth oven and double-distilled in copper.
What to Expect in the Glass
Madre Cuishe is known for a signature creaminess, and this expression delivers it fully — pecan, walnut, and raw wet oak on the palate, layered with moss, stone, and a bright note of watermelon fruitiness. It's woody, nutty, earthy, and unmistakably complex — widely regarded among mezcal drinkers as one of the more rewarding Karwinskii expressions to sip slowly.
Why This Bottle Matters
Every bottle of small-batch mezcal carries the fingerprint of the person who made it — but this one carries something more. It's a chance to taste the work of a mezcalero whose craft is now remembered, not just enjoyed, by the people who got to experience it.
Pour it slowly, and pour it with intention — this one deserves both.
