Cupreata 2022 375 mL – Isaias

Same mezcalero, same land, a different moment in time.

This 2022 batch comes from Isaías Olivares Guillermo, a mezcalero from El Trapiche in the municipality of Ahuacuotzingo, Guerrero — a region in the "La Montaña" area where mezcal-making has been passed down for generations, even as fewer producers keep the tradition alive each year. This bottle captures his craft as it stands today: brighter, more vibrant, and closer to the agave it came from.

Wild Agave, Mineral Terroir

The agave used here is Cupreata — locally called "papalote" — a wild varietal that takes 7 to 15 years to mature on the rocky, mineral-rich slopes of the Balsas River basin, at elevations between 1,200 and 1,800 meters. That slow growth and mineral-heavy soil are what give Guerrero Cupreata its signature depth.

What to Expect in the Glass

Expect the bright, citrusy, lightly smoky nose typical of Cupreata, moving into caramel sweetness with a hint of dark chocolate — livelier and more immediate than an aged vintage, showcasing the agave's character at its most direct.
