This bottle has been waiting almost two decades to be opened.
Long before this bottle reached a shelf, it was a batch of wild Cupreata agave — known locally in Guerrero as "papalote" — harvested and distilled back in 2007 by Isaías Olivares Guillermo, a mezcalero from El Trapiche, in the municipality of Ahuacuotzingo. This is a region in Guerrero's "La Montaña" area where mezcal production has been a way of life for generations, even as production across the region has steadily declined — something Isaías himself has spoken about publicly, reflecting on the challenges facing traditional producers.
Wild Agave, Old-Growth Character
Cupreata takes anywhere from 7 to 15 years just to mature in the wild, growing on the rocky, mineral-rich slopes of the Balsas River basin at elevations between 1,200 and 1,800 meters. That mineral absorption is part of what gives Guerrero Cupreata its distinctive character — and this bottle had nearly two decades of age behind it even before it left the still.
The Ayacahuite Difference
Rather than the pine vats common elsewhere, this batch was fermented in ayacahuite wood — a native highland pine species specific to this part of Mexico — before being double-distilled in a traditional copper pot still. That wood contact adds a subtle resinous depth you won't find in mezcals fermented elsewhere.
What to Expect in the Glass
Expect the hallmark Cupreata profile: citrus and smoke on the nose, opening into caramel sweetness with a whisper of dark chocolate on the finish — rounded out here by the added complexity of nearly 20 years of rest.
Why This Bottle Matters
Vintage-dated mezcal is rare — most bottles reflect a producer's current batch, not a specific year locked in time. A 2007 release from a small, named producer in one of Guerrero's most traditional mezcal-producing regions is a genuine piece of agave spirit history, not just another bottle on the shelf.
A collector's pour — save it for a moment worth marking.
