Maguey Melate · Member Survey

What should the club become?

Last month a long-time member wrote to tell us that our boxes had too many misses to hits lately, and that it was why he'd paused. He was right to write, and he isn't alone — our membership has been slowly shrinking for a few years now.

We'd rather ask you than keep guessing. What you say here decides what goes in the box next year, and what we build around it.

  • It's anonymous
  • ~10 minutes. Very few questions, so take your time on each.
  • It actually decides things
  • Please be honest and thoughtful

About you

Only asked when your link carries no code
1

Where are you with the club right now?

2

How long have you been — or were you — a member?

What goes in the box

The part that matters most
4

Two ways we could fill the box. Which would you rather have?

5

If we went the other way instead, what would you do?

6

We send twelve 375 mL bottles a year. How many can be ones you don't enjoy drinking before the club stops feeling worth the money?

Club Mini sends you eighteen 100 mL bottles a year — six a box, three boxes — and they're the same mezcals the Club gets that year. How many can be ones you don't enjoy drinking before it stops feeling worth the money?

We mean the liquid itself — not whether the bottle was interesting to receive. Ignore the 100 mL bonus bottles here.

We mean the liquid itself — not whether the bottle was interesting to receive. Count in Club terms: one "bottle" here is one of the twelve mezcals the Club gets as a 375.

7

Each box holds two 375 mL bottles and one 100 mL bonus. When a delicious familiar bottle and an unusual one are both on the table, which one deserves the 375 — and which gets poured into the 100?

A Club box holds two 375 mL bottles and one 100 mL bonus. Your Mini box gets all three as 100s, so this doesn't change what you receive — but you know what makes a good box. When a delicious familiar bottle and an unusual one are both on the table, which one deserves the 375 — and which gets poured into the 100?

8

In a year, how many of each would you want in the club?

The first three all come out of the same twelve 375 mL bottles. The last is the 100 mL bonus, of which there are six a year.

Think of it as voting on the Club's year: twelve 375 mL bottles plus six 100 mL bonuses, all eighteen of which reach you as 100s. The first three come out of the twelve; the last is one of the six.

Puntas — 60% ABV and up

Sotol

Pechugas, as a full 375 mL

A non-agave 100 mL bonus bottle — pox, whisky, mango distillate, gin

9

Which of these would you want to see more of? Pick up to five.

Drawn from what we've actually bottled over the last five years.

10

When a bottle turns out to be a clay pot expression, does that change what it's worth to you?

11

Most of what we send is intense — high proof, big character, bottles that ask something of you. Where should the average bottle sit?

The videos, stories and photographs

12

In a normal month, how much of it do you actually watch or read?

13

Two directions we could take it. Which sounds better to you?

14

Which of these would you actually watch or read? Pick up to four.

15

Suppose we stopped making it tomorrow and put that time and money into sourcing better mezcal instead.

16

Chava spends days at each palenque with camera gear, then more days cutting it into the films you see. The alternative is quick and informal — the mezcalero at his still, explaining what he's doing, barely edited. Which would you rather?

Only asked of members who watch at least some of it.

If you paused or left

Only for members who've stepped away
17

What was the main reason? Just the one that mattered most.

18

Was there one bottle that pushed you over?

19

Club Mini is the smaller version: 100 mL bottles, four months apart, $116 a box. Why didn't you switch to it instead of leaving?

20

Club Mini is $116 a box, which works out to $29 a month. If it were a flat $100 a box — $25 a month — would you sign up today?

21

How sure are you about that?

Only asked of people who said yes.

Anything else

Blunt beats polite
3

What actually made you join?

22

If you ran Maguey Melate tomorrow, what's the first thing you'd change?

23

Anything we didn't ask. Blunt beats polite.

Your thank-you (the bottle, or the tasting with Chava) is on the next page, right after you send. Anonymous: nothing on this page is tied to your name or email.

Thank you. Truly. — Dalton
